Most of us learned to specify using templates or examples developed for Design-Bid-Build project delivery. This program explores how those specifications should change when applied to other delivery types. Changes to Division 01 are required for any delivery type, even for Design-Negotiate-Build projects. Specifying for performance comes into play with Delegated Design subcontracts and Design-Build projects. We’ll touch on Design Assist and Integrated Project Delivery, as well.

Learning Objectives:

• Identify specification techniques and language developed for Design-Bid-Build work that may change in other delivery types.
• Understand how parties to the construction contract are addressed differently and have different specification goals in different delivery types.
• Examine and adjust Division 01 to support the selected delivery type.
• Specify performance requirements for Design-Build and Delegated Design work, using design criteria, design substantiation, and quality assurance and control measures.

Vivian Volz is a licensed architect in California with twenty-five years’ experience in practice, focused on specifications since 2002. In her independent specification practice, VVAS, Vivian provides architectural project specifications for commercial, multifamily, and institutional projects. She serves on CSI’s Editorial Advisory Board and the Certification Strategic Group, and she’s a leader in the San Francisco Chapter.
