Speaker: Chris Bennett, CSI & Keith Robinson, FCSI, CSC, FCSC, LEED AP, RSW

The current method of concrete construction is both environmentally and economically unsustainable. Our methods of concrete construction have not fundamentally changed since the early 1960’s. Each year we continue to spend billions of dollars and moisture mitigation, patch and repair instead of focusing on a real solution, to build better concrete. While modern buildings and infrastructure seem to fall apart in only a few decades, Opus Caementicium or Roman concrete has proven that it can remain function for centuries. Why has Roman Concrete proven so resilient? Do we need to constantly coat our concrete in epoxy, latex and acrylics and other materials that add to humanity’s carbon footprint or is there a better way with new technologies that echo the craftsmanship of the past? This program will share data and case studies to demonstrate a road map to a more sustainable future by less expensive, more resilient concrete with less waste and carbon emissions.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Overcome language obstacles between designer and constructor and promote best design practices success
  2. Critique current practices for modern concrete construction and evaluate its impact on our planet with an over.
  3. Design and specify concrete with higher resiliency (sustainability) and a lower carbon footprint using Roman
  4. Describe new curing technologies , and explain their real-world applications in construction, and own their implications

Learning Units will be provided: Yes (LU)
