The Slider

The Slider… No, I’m not talking about Baseball. Even though it is a topic near and dear to me. But I’m not the die-hard fan like Dennis DeLisse. I’m talking about the slide show on the home page. This is kind of a follow up to the 10 Years of CSINext. With that, let's jump into a little history of the Home Page and the Slide Show.

When I made the transition from the original format of Wordpress to Joomla, one of the things I did was explore templates and add on applications. JoomlaShine was one of the first to create a slideshow that did not use or require flash. This was cool because my new iPad (along with the iPhone, I was a Droid user at the time) did not support flash. I wanted something that was dynamic and yet had a very low overhead and load time. This is where the JoomlaShine ImageShow came into play.

I needed to setup a standard image size to show a clear image but did not bog the website down for those users with slower connections. The size I ended up using was 880x250 pixels using a standard screen resolution. The biggest challenge I found was most buildings are tall not long when being photographed. Also, at the time I was using a combination of classic and modern architecture from around the world. This was a reflection on the diversity of our members.

After about a year of international architecture. I reached out to our members for their best regional photos. I thought this would add a personal touch and bring even more relevance to the home page at CSINext. I think this was around 2013 and I didn’t get any responses. So, then the light bulb went off and I had another idea. Post the cities from Board. This worked great because at the time our chapter president Robert Huserik was living in Poland. I pulled together the best images I could find of each city.

I keep the images along the way so if we have any repeats it will be easy to update and continue. It has happened a couple of times. Denver, Columbus and Dallas. This kind of shows us how our CSI Family is knit together. The slides are in the order:

  • President
  • President Elect
  • Secretary
  • Treasurer
  • Director 1
  • Director 2
  • Past PresidentAnd Committee Chairs

The current slides reflect the towns and cities as chosen by the board member. Current images are from:

  • Columbus, Ohio
  • Naples, Idaho
  • Dallas, Texas
  • Tucson, Arizona
  • Colorado Springs, Colorado
  • Denver, Colorado
  • Cincinnati, Ohio
  • Albuquerque, New Mexico

This article came about as I was working on the website, doing some cleanup and maintenance. Is it time for another face lift? Probably not, I still like the simple interface of the website. I try not to work in a vacuum and get input from the board to make sure it is headed in the right direction. But if it changes it is only because we are keeping up with the times.

…and now for something completely different.
A woman from California once tried to sue the makers of Cap’n Crunch, because the Crunch Berries contained “no berries of any kind.”
