Ideas for the next Decade

The year 2021 is just around the corner. I know there are a bunch of us that just want to wish the year 2020 away. The reality is it here and it will always be a part of history that we have survived. The sad news is there are a lot of us who did not get to see the new year. I wish to take a silent moment to remember those.

Catching up on the year, the decade, and well into the 21st century. I saw a funny meme at this point, I think most of know what a meme is, but Wikipedia defines “a meme is an idea, behavior, or style that becomes a fad and spreads by means of imitation from person to person within a culture and often carries symbolic meaning representing a particular phenomenon or theme”. But back to the meme, noted in my last blog… “What if 2020 isn’t a ‘Bad Year’ but the start of a ‘Bad Decade’?”

I first laughed, man there is someone with a sense of humor more warped than mine. Then denial, the year will be over, and life will return to normal. But anger sets in at the thought of not just months but years, really kicks in when you see toilet paper shelves are bare. If I don’t buy more toilet paper maybe I can bargain my way out of this. Hearing about a friend or loved one contracting the COVID or sheltering at home for 6 months leads to one’s personal depression.

Finally, acceptance that this is our new normal. Yes, I just walked through the 5 stages of grief. All because of a meme. But then I realized 2020 is not the beginning of the next decade, but the end of the last one. Twenty years ago, we had some of the same discussions about the beginning of the new millennium. I prefer to base my ideas on facts and not speculation or what makes the most sense in my mind. Simply put, on our calendar there is no year ZERO. So, every new decade, century and millennium begins on year 1 (ie 11, 101, 1001, 1901 & 2001).

I’ve neglect most of my writing this year. Good news, it’s the busiest I’ve ever been at work. Bad News is work has not been at work but 6 months plus of stay at home. I should have been able to find time to put my thoughts on paper. I have done just that. Here is quick list of the ideas I wish to share in the coming weeks. Yes, weeks, I do plan to get back on track.

  • Accessibility Series
  • Sheet Numbering
  • CAD vs BIM
  • Revit Mega Projects
  • Revit & BIM360
  • Revit Families

I scribble out the ideas. Then create a bunch of these ideas with a starting paragraph in word. Finally, I always hope to wrap it up by my self-imposed Tuesday deadline. Time to move forward and embrace the new year. Circling back around, may we all put an end to the last decade and start fresh in 2021. Until next time, I wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season.

…and now for something completely different.
An average person would be spending 6 months of his life waiting for the signal to turn from red to green light.
