In Memory of Dick Eustis

It is with Sad news that another one of the CSI 'greats' is no longer with us. Richard A. Eustis, PE, FCSI, Lifetime Member, CCCA, CSC passed away on January 26, 2016. There are several post on Facebook that I wanted to repost here and add my own tribute to him.

I personally had the honor of meeting Dick for the first time via teleconference while serving on the CSI Governance Reform Institute Task Team (GRITT). We had very different views as to how this would come about. I was the 'young' kid and he was the 'seasoned' expert. But in reality Dick was a good listener and an even more patient teacher. He brought so much rich history with him without losing sight that we needed to embrace the future. My time on GRITT with Dick taught me more about the rich past of the CSI governance than I could read in a life time. After a year and a half of conference calls, several meetings, I truely considered Dick a mentor and friend.

Dick will be missed. While his knowledge, heart and care for CSI may never be matched. Those of us who knew him will always remember him and do our best to carry on his legacy.

"Yesterday I lost my Dad. He was 83 - my lifelong mentor, a tech geek (how many seniors have 2 desktops, a laptop, an iPad, and over 3000 people in their e-mail contact list?), the person who always knew the answer to any question I asked, and a respected member of the State, National, and International Civil Engineering community. He will be with me always." Debbie Eustis-Grandy

"I have very sad news as of late yesterday afternoon. After only 24 hours in rehab at Ross Manor in Bangor, Dick Eustis, my best friend, left us for a better place. Fortunately, I had seen him in the morning as his neighbor and I took him clothes and his computer. He looked better than usual. All I can say is, God love him. He was such a tremendous friend, and we had a wonderful time together for 4 1/2 years." Laura Messinger

RICHARD A. EUSTIS was born in 1932 in Strong, Maine. After graduation from Strong High School, he entered the University of Maine, graduating in 1955 with a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering. Later that year, he enlisted in the U.S. Army serving nearly two years in Germany with the 2nd Armored Division. He returned with the Division to Fort Hood, Texas where he spent eight months training new recruits.

Following his military service, Eustis was employed by the University of Maine as an Engineering Aide. Over the next several years he received several promotions within the department eventually holding the title, Director of Engineering Services.

In 1968, the three campus University of Maine was merged with the five campus State College system into a new University of Maine System having seven campuses. Eustis joined the new University System administration and became responsible for all capital construction undertaken at any of the seven campuses.

In 1970, Eustis was introduced to CSI and immediately saw the benefits of CSI's formats and recommended procedures. Within a few months he had established a policy that all Project Manuals prepared for University projects would be done in conformance with CSI formats.

Soon after joining CSI, Eustis became active in the Maine Chapter becoming a Chapter Director in 1972. In 1975 he was elected Chapter President. he later served a two year term as Region Treasurer followed by a two year term as Region Technical Chairman.

Eustis chaired a reorganized Institute Technical Committee in 1982 and 1983. This was immediately followed by a three year term as Institute Director representing the Northwest Region. During this same time period, Eustis was also active in the Association of High Education Facilities Officers (APPA) holding several Region Offices including Region President. He also helped found the North New England Chapter of APPA and served as its first President.
