Typically in construction we measure the progress of projects using the Earned Value Method also knows as “Percent Complete” as it is commonly referred to and general field observations. However, Earned Value when coupled with schedule progress measures the overall schedule performance not in units of time, but rather in cost. By expressing performance in units of dollars instead of time’ at the completion of a project the schedule variance will show zero. That is great IF the project completed on time and on budget. But what happens if the project completed late? The time based schedule may show the project completed late, but yet under standard Earned Value Management the reported variance factors at completion show a perfect schedule performance! How do we overcome this dilemma and avoid the always uncomfortable post mortem discussions on why a project completed late or was over budget? Welcome in the Earned Schedule analytical technique!

Earned Schedule is an extension to the earned value management technique that incorporates time based indicators that help in providing a status and prediction ability for future project performance. Earned Schedule acts a bridge between earned value and schedule analysis that can improve cost and schedule prediction.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Background of the Earned Schedule Technique & Development
  2. How Earned Schedule is applied in construction projects & organizations
  3. Current tools used in the industry to apply earned schedule
