(PMI) 4th Edition - Construction Extension to the PMBOK – Coming In 2016!

In continuing to maintain the professional development units that obtaining a Project Management Professional Certification (PMP) requires I was selected to be one of the Subject Matter Experts (SME’s) to participate in the overall content review of the upcoming release of the PMI’s 4th Edition of the Construction Extension to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) 5th Edition.

Similar to how the CSI focuses on improving project delivery and the education of its industry professionals the PMI works to further the profession of project management as a whole through standards, research, and education. Being a professional in the construction industry for over 20 years and being a credentialed member in both organizations I have been able to examine and apply the standards and practices of both the CSI and PMI in my daily work to much success. So when the opportunity arose to help contribute to the professional knowledge base specifically related to the construction industry I happily volunteered.

I think we can all speak from experience that construction is different from most industries, and specifically construction project management itself. While most projects are performed within an organizations principal environment and such things as complexity, risk, and resources may not be exactly the same between endeavors they do remain similar to some degree. In construction, projects can be performed across a multitude of different environments (commercial, industrial, energy, public infrastructure, roads & highways) and in different geographical locations, and contain varying degrees of complexity, risk both known and unknown, and the involvement of multiple disciplines sometimes under the control of the performing organization and sometimes not but none the less they are part of the project team.

As members of CSI we are very fortunate to have multiple resources such as the PDPG, the CCAPG, and the CSPG to help guide us and provide a platform for recommended practices in the industry. The 4th Edition Construction Extension to the PMBOK Guide seeks to supplement the general foundation for managing projects with specific knowledge areas and practices that are found within the construction industry. This is much different from previous versions in that earlier content followed the same general format of the PMBOK with additional content referenced to the corresponding PMBOK section, much like you would see in project Addendums. The upcoming edition follows the general format, but dives into each knowledge group and process area in detail and reads more like a guide than a reference document.

I’m very excited to let everyone know that the release of this document is planned for some time in the first quarter of 2016 and from my involvement with it I think it is one of the most comprehensive collections of construction project management knowledge, processes, and industry related specifics that can help any organization improve not only their project delivery, but their overall project management practices as well.
