President’s Message - September 2014

Greetings CSINexters!
It’s Back to School Time! There’s nothing like a fall football Saturday night in Tiger Stadium (AKA Death Valley) at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge! As you can see by the satellite view, Thomas W. Atkinson Hall (the School of Architecture) was just mere blocks from Tiger Stadium. We spent many a Saturday night hearing the roar of the crown well before the radio announcer told us what had happened. It wasn’t until I was out in the working world that I really experienced the true tailgating experienced that is a football game at LSU.

I bet you are wondering what this has to do with CSINext? Well, I will tell you. We are concerned with the built environment. The Olmsted Brothers, the two sons of renowned landscape architect, Frederick Law Olmsted, planned LSU. It is a wonderfully walkable campus with hundreds of old live oak trees creating canopies of shade throughout. If you’ve even visited the campus of Stanford University in northern California, you’ve tasted a little bit of the LSU flavor since the same firm is responsible.

The Board has a great year planned for us. As you know, we hold all of our meetings virtually using GoToMeeting online. You never have to leave your office to earn a continuing education credit because we bring them right to your desk. Our meeting will all be held the second Wednesday of each month at noon eastern time. We will be looking at materials and methods when we learn about masonry construction from the Brick Association. Historic renovation is another one of our subjects for this year with two presentations. One meeting will cover the U.S. Capitol Complex and the other will be joint meeting with a historic preservation group in Krakow. Poland. For us, the world is our canvas. Three of our meetings will cover more electronic media aspects of our work including digital documents, electronic bidding, and electronic submittal programs. We’re also going to dive back into the legal world to look at some of the things in the architect/owner contracts that are controlled by individual state law.

We have a busy year planned. I am looking forward to getting started in a couple of weeks and I hope you are, too. As always, we welcome your ideas and your participation. If you wish to chime in, please give me a shout. The success of this chapter depends on you and what you bring to the table – help us make it better and make it last.

Enjoy the fall!
