CSINext January 2018 Anniversaries

We’ve been hacked! Not just once, but twice. With that CSINext has moved its hosting and domain to goDaddy. For the moment, everything looks the same, but we will have a few more changes under the hood. The first thing you will notice is the speed improvement, being closer to the top of the chain and on faster servers makes a big difference. We have upgraded Joomla to the latest for improved security (and hope to prevent Hacks in the future).

HAPPY NEW YEAR CSINext & Welcome to 2018!

We have been busy behind the scenes at CSINext. We had our chapter meeting with a good turn out last November and the meeting is just around the corner in February (tenative date is February 16th). The chapter is officially incorporated and in the final stages of setting up the bank account. We continue to have member growth with our current chapter membership at 22.We held our CSINext board meeting on December 21, 2010 and the next one is scheduled for February.

It's about the journey

Just as you thought CSINext may have flat lined, it is still very much alive. We just had our November Chapter meeting and the next one is scheduled for January 19th. But I’m mainly writing this message to share a long journey that ends with “very good news”.

President’s Message - November 2014

You may be asking yourself… why is this site keep changing? Two simple words ‘Virtual Chapter’. Or in geek speak, Social Network. The site is built on Joomla!, it is nothing more than CMS (Content Management System). But that is only the beginning we need to expand on the member experience. The interface has been updated for a fresh look that makes it much easier to navigate. As web site grows, we need to make sure that content is easy to find. The result is using a very popular layout template JA Purity.

Chapter Meeting 11/17/10

It is getting closer to the next chapter meeting! The topic will be Specifications: Can Less Be Enough? presented by John R Guill AIA, CSI, CCS, CCA, SCIP. The meeting will be held on it in November 17, 2010 at 2:00pm ET via a webinar. Space is limited. Reserve your Webinar seat now at: https://www1.gotomeeting.com/register/532208553

How much is that doggy in the window?

Greetings fellow charter members of CSINext. We are excited to get CSINext rolling, the chapter board has begun meeting on a regular basis taking care of the procedural and operational business issues. Keeping with institute bylaws, the chapter needs to hold its Charter meeting. To accomplish this we will be doing it virtually via a webinar setup. Mark your calendars for April 9th at 4:00pm EDT. We look forward to having you attend.

What's a hack?

First, welcome to the club. Sorry for your situation. There is nothing particularly unique in our "underemployed" status. If misery loves company, we have a large and growing company!

Welcome CSINext New Members!

The holidays are over and it is time for a changing of the guard… digital guard that is. At the November 17, 2009 Board Meeting, the Institute Board chartered the first virtual chapter. CSINext is the brain child of CSI Member Brent Williams. With social media storming through the internet like wild fire, CSINext is the next evolution of the CSI chapter. You may be familiar with Blogging, Facebook, and Twitter which is social networking. This is where CSINext comes in, taking the traditional chapter model to the digital world via social networking. Basically, allowing access to potential CSI members all over the world.

CSINext February 2016 Meeting

What you talkin’ about Willis? Just a little throw back from the 70’s… CSINext has implemented Private Messaging (PM) and Article Comments. Each of these will help to expand the Virtual Chapter experience. One of the key strengths to CSI is communication and the member network. CSINext strives to do this in a virtual way. Just like any good Social Network.

CSINext January 2018 Anniversaries

Lots of news to report. First, it's looking like the CSI board is going to approve our petition for charter, so we can finally get down to the business of community building with some legitimacy.

The Future of Specifications...in the future...

Our October webinar, set for Wednesday, October 28th, at 2pm EST, has been postponed to November 18th because of technical issues. We apologize for the delay, but learning the particulars of a virtual environment are new and a lot more complex that you might imagine. We hope that you will join us on November the 18th  at 2pm EST for an insightful look into the near future of communications in the construction industry. Simply join our email list...the sign up link is located on the lower left side of this page...to receive a free invitation to the webinar.

A GlassBuild lesson...

Yesterday I spent the day attending GlassBuild 2009 at the Georgia World Congress Center. GlassBuild is the largest trade assembly solely devoted to the glazing construction industry in the world.  Lots of amazing products, vendors and speakers.

The single biggest lesson learned from the show? Visual is IN! Greater than 80% of the vendors that were displaying “glazing” materials (glass, plexiglass and other things used to fill a hole in a building) were displaying decorative products front and center. Fritted glass, dimensional glass, ceramic printed glass...and the machines and equipment used to produce them...were upfront and stars of the show.

Being a futurist...or a NOWist...

Given the amount of discussion that I've heard lately, you'd think that the "virtual world" was as foreign to the A/E community as is the term "successful BIM integration". OK, so I"m guiding the lily a bit, but I've run into a lot of opposition to building a virtual chapter lately within the CSI community. It seems to me that there is a great amount of angst over the thought of opening our somewhat closed community to large numbers of emerging professionals with their 24/7 addiction to everything digital. Irrational as it may seem, there is a lot of fear of the future, and understandably so.

CSINext February 2013 Meeting

Over the last few months, as the development team has been diligently working on building CSINext, I’ve spent a large amount of time looking at how other member based organizations are handling the shift from traditional, face to face networking to a newer, more virtual communication process. What I’m finding is both encouraging and discouraging.

In Memory of Dick Eustis

CSI has more than 140 chapters across the U.S. When CSINext receives its charter, it will be unique among them. The biggest difference? Simple...target market. Until CSINext, all of CSI's chapters - even the ones meeting by conference call and webinar - were specific to a particular city or geographic region. They grew out of a location, and focused in part on that location's construction community.

Are Specwriters going the way of the Dinosaur?

In this month’s Architect, Edward Keegan does an excellent job of delineating the turmoil which the job description of “spec writer” currently seems to be under. There is no denying that the traditional picture of a dutiful technical writer, toiling away creating tomes that equal a phone book in scale, is under attack by new and disruptive technologies, online spec engines and systems and new design methodologies such as BIM. While all of this is true, the simple fact remains that you cannot complete any modern construction project with simple drawings alone, no matter how you generate those designs. You’ve got to have a full understanding of your design elements and how they relate to each other, and that relationship is always handled through the “specs”.
