The International Building Code (IBC) is an essential tool intended to preserve public health and safety by providing safeguards from hazards associated with the built environment. The IBC addresses design and installation of firestopping materials that meet or exceed public health and safety goals. The IBC provisions provide many benefits, among which is the model code.

This course is intended to identify critical areas and guidelines for firestopping within the IBC that architects, specifiers, construction industry professionals, building officials, fire marshals, firestop contractors and other stakeholders must be aware of to ensure code requirements for a building's life safety a re met.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify code requirements for through penetration firestopping and understand relevant test standards ASTM E814 & UL1479
  2. Identify code requirements for fire-resistant-rated joint systems and understand relevant test standards ASTM E1966 & UL2079
  3. Identify code requirements for perimeter fire containment systems and understand relevant test standard ASTM E2307
  4. Recognize when special inspections are required and standards for evaluating firestop penetration (ASTM E2174) and joint (ASTM E2393) firestop systems

About the Speaker:

Michael Crall is a Field Engineer – Central North America for Specified Technologies Inc.

STI is a global firestop manufacturer located in New Jersey with engineering offices in NJ and OK. Michael’s experience includes 30 years in IBC / NFPA Compliance Standards, Barrier Management Strategies, healthcare facility audits and has been providing AIA / BICSI and various state approved presentations for over 25 years.
Michael currently sits on various building code, regulatory committees and building code roundtables facilitating technical presentations to architect, building code official, fire marshal and construction trades for continuing education. Michael has partnered with healthcare facility owners to assess and design proactive barrier management compliance programs. When provided an opportunity to present CEU programs, the content is historical and code based, along with industry examples found during building construction or healthcare facility surveys.

Married 33 years with 23-year-old triplet boys who have each earned the rank of Eagle Scout with Eagle Palms. Garrett graduated from Lake Superior State with a BS in Fire Science and has passed his Fire Fighter I / II and Hazmat certification and is working toward EMT and Paramedic certification, while working for the Canonsburg, MI Fire Department. Grant graduated from Ferris University with an AS in Automotive Service
Technology; Grant is also serving in the Army National Guard and recently returned home from deployment. Nick is also attending Ferris University and is pursuing a BS in Bio-Medical Technology. Nick has been responsible for running two research labs at Ferris performing Diabetes, COVID and Alzheimer medication studies and will be pursuing his PhD at Auburn in 2023. Michael and his boys recently completed restoring a
1968 Corvette Roadster, which included rewiring of the entire car, replacement of fiber optics, vacuum lines, steering / suspension components, engine, and transmission. 1984-1988 North Central Technical College – Electronics Technology
